Necessary Safety Equipment During Water Damage Mitigation And Restoration Of Cresskill Houses

Water that seeps out from around a loose joint or appliance’s seal or comes bursting full force from a broken pipe can cause homes in Cresskill problems that gradually spread, worsen, and become increasingly more costly and time-consuming to mitigate and repair.

Residents in Cresskill facing potential water damage and related situations might feel tempted to perform the work themselves. Using proper safety measures, including personal protective equipment (PPE), keeps those wet handling materials safe. SERVPRO’s technicians use a variety of PPE, so doing the mitigation work becomes safer and less hazardous.

Even with clean water that poses little or no risk of contamination, water can change the previously safe condition of your house to one with hidden problems. Electrical issues are one of these. It only takes a little amount of water to cause short circuits. Touching wet appliances can lead to severe consequences. To avoid this, we use an electrical circuit tester. This tells us if the electricity in a house is active or off. To help us avoid cables and cords that we might step on, we use heavy sold rubber boots that also keep water out.

Cleaning up large messes generally requires the use of chemicals. To mix these, we wear both goggles and chemically resistant gloves. At times, when contamination levels seem high, we might use latex surgical gloves underneath to help us when we remove our full-body suits at the end of the day. The goggles protect our eyes from splashes and misted droplets.

When the pH of any chemicals rests at the end of the scale on either side, we often wear face protection, as well. It is always easier for us to clean up spills and splashes on equipment than to get medical treatment after an injury. Also, during the application of many chemicals, we use respirators to help us avoid breathing fumes that might affect our health.

Along with safety goggles, we also use heavy-duty gloves for removing destroyed materials. Water might cause the drywall to soften, and removing sections often exposes nails and other types of sharp fasteners. Other hazardous conditions often exist, including those where we need to use hard hats. Our building services team helps us with the worst scenarios, helping get homes back into pre-damage condition quickly and with as little expense as possible to the homeowners.

While smaller jobs do not require all this, SERVPRO always arrives, ready to start work, with the PPE needed to protect each team member from possible harm. When we find contaminated areas, we already have the additional types of PPE we need in our Green Fleet.
