Winter Weather & Your Property

It’s that time of the year again, right as you open your front door you feel the chilly breeze and see frost on the grass. Within no time northern New Jersey will get its first snow fall of the year. In most cases getting snow isn’t that bad and is mainly annoying for those of us that are driving around. When we get a storm that’s when snow can be problematic and can potentially damage your home or business. Freezing rain is another concern as well and can cause a handful of problems. The Variety of Ways your Property can be Effected

There are plenty of scenarios that can lead to your home and/or business being damaged from the elements especially during the winter months. We will go over a few of the issues you should keep an eye out for, so you can take action quickly.

  • Ice Dams – This is one of the more frequent/common ways your home or business can be damaged during the winter. When ice builds up it clogs your gutters, when the snow begins to melt the water has nowhere to go and the water backs up under the roof and refreezes, since it isn’t being drained away from the house. It can lead to water damage, mold growth and rot if action isn’t taken as soon as it is discovered.
  • Snow Damage – When snow is on your roof it may not look like much, but it can be pretty heavy and could cause structural damage increasing the chances of a roof leak. It is important to not pile up snow near the foundation, because once it begins to melt the soil may become over saturated and potentially cause property damage.
  • Frozen & Burst Pipes – When it comes proper plumbing winterization, most pipes will not encounter many issues. Faucets that are located on the outside along with plumbing located in unheated areas, such as a garage or crawlspace have the highest risk of an issue happening in extremely cold temperatures. There are a few measures that a person can take that may help prevent a situation like that from occurring, keeping the facets at a trickle will keep the water flowing to avoid pressure build up and potentially prevent pipe freezes.

These are just a few common ways your home and/or business can be damaged by the harsh cold weather during the winter. The best way to prevent these situation is to make sure you are maintaining the property and staying alert by simply preforming a quick walk around to see if anything may require your attention.
